It is well known that the Daxx protein is a transcriptional repressor that binds to the TATA box and the initiator elements. In addition, Daxx can also be found in the nuclear bodies, where it acts as a nuclear shuttling factor or as a transcription factor. Recent studies have shown that Daxx is a key factor in hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) regulation. Most importantly, Daxx may be a novel marker for HSCs. Daxx was shown to be a master regulator of osteogenesis and also able to regulate HSC maintenance and fate decision. Furthermore, Daxx was found to be a key factor in hematopoietic malignancies, where its deregulation can lead to leukemogenesis. Finally, recent studies showed that Daxx is necessary for regulating HSC quiescence and HSC reconstitution. Here, we provide an overview of the current findings on Daxx in the hematopoietic system and highlight the important role of Daxx in stem cell regulation.(Note: The peak in the distribution of world GDP per capita from about 1850 to 1970, shown here, is due to improvements in agricultural productivity, which results in an increase in global GDP for every unit of agricultural output.)
There are many good reasons for thinking that we are in a global economic crisis. A careful analysis of the world economy does not lead one to any other conclusion.
Part I. Where Have We Been?
The crisis of the world economy was first formally recognized in the 1970s, when the world’s per capita GDP was only around 1/10th of the level of the 1950s. Yet, the recovery of the world economy began, and indeed has continued, at the beginning of the 21st century. Per capita GDP doubled in that time. This is shown in the figure.
